19 September 2008 – The latest vaccination campaign in Somalia to fight the spread of measles has reached more than 140,000 children despite the overall climate of insecurity and violence, the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) announced today.

The Lebanese army said on Monday that Syria has boosted troop numbers along the border but that Damascus has noted the move is linked to a crackdown against smugglers. “Nearly 10,000 Syrian special forces have been deployed in the Abbudiya region along the border between Lebanon and Syria,” an army spokesman told AFP.

Rear Admiral Andrei Baranov, head of the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s operations directorate, said Friday the Russian engineering crew was at Tartus to expand the capacity of the harbor to host additional fleet vessels.

The teams will also be working on expanding Latakia, another Syrian port, possibly for aircraft carriers or guided missile cruisers, said Baranov.

On Sept. 12, nearly one month after the south Caucases conflict broke out, Russia and Syria reached an agreement that would provide Moscow with a long-term base rights at Syrian ports.

WASHINGTON - At least 49 offshore oil platforms, all with production of fewer than 1,000 barrels a day, were destroyed by hurricane Ike as it raced across the Gulf of Mexico, and some may not be rebuilt, the Interior Department said Thursday.

It said in the latest hurricane damage assessment that the platforms altogether accounted for-,000 barrels of oil and 2.3 million cubic metres of natural gas a day. There are more than 3,800 production platforms in the Gulf producing 1.3 million barrels of oil and’8 million cubic metres of gas each day.
