ARMED guards are patrolling the grounds of the Athenian Riviera’s luxurious Astir Palace resort this weekend to ensure impenetrable privacy for a coterie of A1 celebrities – but don’t ask who they are.

They are attending the annual gathering of the powerful Bilderberg illuminati, a club so secret that officially it does not even exist.

The five-star hotel is hosting a roll call of luminaries – royalty, politicians, bankers, plutocrats and backroom power brokers – who will be debating the great global problems of the day and what they might do to solve them.

Since its foundation in the Netherlands in 1954 at the Hotel de Bilderberg, the group has guarded its identity so jealously that only a chosen few are summoned and attendance is strictly by invitation only.

One well-placed insider, who dared not give his name, said: “Bilderberg makes the Vatican look positively open. These are hugely influential people, men and women who truly wield power.”

The Athens meeting, its 55th, might have gone unnoticed had it not been for the intense media scrutiny that the organisation has come under with the advent of the internet and technology-driven information transparency.

Ever hear of Bilderberg? If not, that’s the idea.

According to various Web sites, the Bilderberg is an “unofficial, annual, invitation-only conference of around 130 guests, most of whom are persons of influence in the fields of politics, business and banking.”

The names of alleged past participants of this secretive group include former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, former World Bank president Paul Wolfowitz, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and even former President Bill Clinton.

The Bilderberg group is currently holding its 57th annual conference at a hotel outside Athens, Greece. And while the list of the some 120 influential people is highly protected, Internet bloggers contend this year’s attendees include Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who supposedly will be “taking orders from the Global Elite,” according to one Web site.

The circle got its name from the Bilderberg hotel in the Netherlands, where the first meeting took place in 1954. The group is a “broad cross section of leading citizens that are assembled for nearly three days of informal and off-the-record discussions about topics of current concern especially in the fields of foreign affairs and the international economy,” according to a brochure the group provides to interested parties.

The booklet also mentions the topics that the Bilderbergs have discussed in the past.

In 1988, one year before German re-unification, one of the topics was “The German question revisited.” At the 2007 conference in Istanbul, Turkey, the power elites talked about “The new world order: uni-polar or non-polar?”

At last year’s conference in Virginia, “Cyber-terrorism” and “After Bush: The future of U.S.-EU relations” was on the agenda.

The agendas make it clear: The Bilderbergs do not come together for a vacation. It is big-world politics that are discussed at the meetings.

But how can a group that sends out a booklet with its agenda be so secretive? For starters, the group does not have an official headquarters, and no telephone operator will be able to provide you a phone number for the group.

However, some journalists who have dealt with the group for decades claim to have inside sources. These journalists publicized the phone number of the group on the Internet. The number is consistent with telephone numbers at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. If you dial the number, Maya Banks-Poldermann, the executive secretary of Bilderberg, will pick up the phone but she will not mention the group’s name. Only after asking if you have reached the Bilderberg office, will she confirm. The secretary will offer to send out the group’s booklet, but will not answer any questions.

In addition, the members will not talk about the meetings.

Does this group of power elites accomplish anything? It depends on whom you ask.

According to the Bilderberg brochure, “at the meetings, no resolutions are proposed, no votes are taken, and no policy statements issued.”

But George McGhee, a former U.S. ambassador to West Germany, reportedly told Mike Peters, a sociologist from Leeds University, that the “The Treaty of Rome … which brought the Common Market into being, was nurtured at Bilderberg meetings.”

What will come out of this year’s meeting, which ends Sunday?

It will be hard to find out. Britain’s Guardian newspaper carried a story from a reporter who was arrested for taking photos of the meeting site, so it is clear the group takes its secrecy seriously. However, that will not stop the meeting from being a hot topic on the Internet or from fueling bloggers’ speculation.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Police heavily guarded a luxury resort in Greece on Saturday where a secretive annual rendezvous of top politicians and business leaders reportedly took place.

Several dozen Greek demonstrators gathered outside the Astir Palace hotel in the coastal town of Vouliagmeni to criticize the Bilderberg Group, an international group that was founded half a century ago in the Netherlands.

It has no widely known headquarters, meets secretly at luxury hotels and resorts throughout the world by invitation only, and generally makes no public announcements afterward.

The demonstrators, from Greece’s right-wing Popular Orthodox Rally party, shouted slogans and held a large banner saying “Bilderberg Unwelcome” outside the hotel, which is 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Athens on the Aegean Sea. One demonstrator was arrested when the group tried to break through a police cordon.

“We came here to protest this anti-Greek meeting,” Argyris Sideris, a regional party secretary, told the Associated Press. “We need to do something to protect our country.”

The popular hotel was closed to the public.

A police officer told The Associated Press the resort was being protected by hundreds of police, navy commandos, coast guard speedboats and two F-16 fighter planes. The officer spoke on condition of anonymity, in keeping with his department’s regulations.

Outside the hotel on Friday, Greek Communist Party members conducted a peaceful demonstration against the Bilderberg Group.

Greek newspapers said the secret meeting of the politicians and managers of world capitalism included Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis.

The papers said this year’s invitees also included U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner; Larry Summers, the director of the U.S. National Economic Council; the Obama administration’s special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke; World Bank President Robert Zoellick; European Central Bank president Jean-Claude Trichet and European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso.

But those reports could not be independently confirmed.

The three-day meeting apparently ended Saturday.

ATHENS (AFP)–Some of the world’s top business and political leaders started annual secret talks with the Bilderberg group Thursday in a suburb of Athens, under tight security control.

The surroundings of the Astir Palace, a luxury hotel in the suburban resort of Vouliagmeni, where the group is holding its annual meeting, were protected by dozens of policemen, who were keeping the press and public at bay, an AFP journalist said.

A Greek navy launch and boats carrying elite divers could be seen a few meters off the coast of the peninsula where the hotel stands. Greek newspapers said the group had also asked for the protection of two F-16 warplanes and a police helicopter.

Reports say U.S. State Department number two James Steinberg, U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, World Bank President Robert Zoellick, European Commission head Jose Manuel Barroso, Queen Sofia of Spain and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands are among those attending the Bilderberg meeting.

The group, which has been holding annual off-the record talks open to guests only since 1954, feeds conspiracy theories and speculation about its intentions, with critics accusing it of plotting world domination.

Several sources say Polish political adviser Joseph Retinger, former Belgian prime minister Paul van Zeeland and former Unilever chief executive Paul Rijkens organized the first meeting at the Hotel Bilderberg in the Netherlands to unite European and U.S. elites amid growing transatlantic tensions a half-century ago.

Its success spawned similar talks at posh hotels and palaces in Europe, the U.S. and Canada each year since.

Bed space is a bit tight there for the next two days while the Bilderberg illuminati hold their private conclave in the five-star Greek hotel. Every year since 1954 a club of about 130 senior or up-and-coming politicians gather at the fireside of a secluded hotel with top bankers and a sprinkling of royalty to discuss burning issues, to trade confidences and just stay abreast of the I-know-something-you-don’t-know circuit. No lists of participants are disclosed, no press conferences are held; spill the beans and you’re out of the magic circle.

For those of us standing outside the locked gates all that is left is to hope that they will sleep well, avoid jet ski injury and solve our problems for us. For the Bilderbergers it is a little like that recent MI5 recruitment ad: “See all your best work go unnoticed!”

Each country delegates two people to the steering committee that is the intellectual hub of Bilderberg. In the past Kenneth Clarke, the Shadow Business Secretary, and Martin Taylor, formerly head of Barclays Bank, have had their hand on the British tiller.

The Bilderberg group consists of about 140 wealthy and powerful people who meet annually to discuss key global issues. Named after the Bilderberg hotel in Oosterbeek, the Netherlands, where it held its first meeting in 1954, the group is highly secretive, doesn’t let journalists attend unless they agree beforehand not to report on the proceedings, and won’t even say who is a member.

It’s known that attendees include politicians, royalty, wealthy industrialists and back-room power brokers. Conspiracy theorists say the group essentially controls the world and makes key decisions on international policy.

Canadians who have gone to the meetings in the past include Heather Reisman, chief executive officer of Indigo Books & Music Inc., former Torstar Corp. CEO Robert Prichard, former prime minister Jean Chrétien and former New Brunswick premier Frank McKenna. Conrad Black has attended many times and he organized the 1996 meeting that was held just north of Toronto. The last time the Bilderberg group met in Canada was in June, 2006.

This year’s session is set to start this Thursday in Vouliagmeni, Greece, just south of Athens. The global financial crisis will undoubtedly be on the agenda. Needless to say, Lord Black won’t be in attendance.

While China and other Asian countries have been hit hard by the recession, economies in the region are continuing to grow while the West has been shrinking. The International Monetary Fund recently forecast 6.5-per-cent growth in China in 2009 (down from 13 per cent in 2007 and 9 per cent in 2008). The advanced economies of the West are expected to shrink 3.8 per cent on average this year.

Mr. Soros said yesterday that Asia will be the first region to pull out of the crisis and that China could overtake the United States as the engine of global growth. Still, China represents only about 7 per cent of the global economy, so there needs to be a more widespread recovery for the world to pull out of its funk.

Are developing countries really improving that much faster than the West?

BMO Nesbitt Burns economist Douglas Porter noted last week that some indicators in China and India are showing solid gains relative to similar markers in the West. Retail and auto sales statistics in China, for example, are much better than in North America, and industrial purchasing in both India and China is on the rise. Stock markets in developing countries have also risen much more quickly than those in Europe and North America.

The 2009 Bilderberg Group Conference will be held at the five-star Nafsika Astir Palace Hotel in Vouliagmeni, Greece, May 14-17, according to author Daniel Estulin. Insiders have told Estulin that rooms have been booked and flight plans made. He has also confirmed the location and dates with sources in Greece. Estulin is the world’s foremost investigative authority on this annual secretive and exclusive assembly, having investigated and infiltrated their meetings for over ten years.

A meeting in June in Europe of the Bilderberg Group – an informal club of leading politicians, businessmen and thinkers chaired by Mr Davignon – could also “improve understanding” on future action, in the same way it helped create the euro in the 1990s, he said.

“When we were having debates on the euro, people [at Bilderberg events] could explain why it was worth taking risks and the others, for whom the formal policy was not to believe in it, were not obliged not to listen and had to stand up and come up with real arguments.”

The Bilderberg club is famous for gathering the most powerful people in the world at least once per year. There, they can talk behind closed doors. This year, the club will organize its meeting in Athens between 14th and 16th of May, says Elefterios Tipos newspaper.

In the list of invited guests are the Queen of Netherlands Beatrix, the Spanish Queen Sophia, and diplomats from the rank of the US National Security Council James Jones. Also among the invited are ministers of foreign affairs like the Turkish one Ali Babacan, who will get the chance for a tête-à-tête meeting with the Greek minister of foreign affairs Dora Bakoyanni. Except for political figures, the meeting will host representatives of giant companies like Domenico Siniscalco from “Morgan Stanley”.

From Greek side participants will be the Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis and the leader of the opposition party PASOK Georgios Papandreou, as well as ministers and powerful figures from political and public life of the country like the president of the National Bank of Greece Takis Arapoglou and the chairman of the public telecommunications company OTE Panayotis Vourloumis.

Except for the 30-35 permanent members of the Bilderberg Club, the list of invited people change every year depending on who can influence the developments on the international scene. On the meeting will be present also the management of NATO, politicians, publishers, and journalists.

“The silence law” is the first rule, which all invited to the world of Bilderberg must abide to. This is why the daily schedule remains secret but the current events leave no doubt that the main topic of discussion will be the global economic crisis.

The history of Bilderberg Club passes through secret meetings in distant hotels and discussions, which no one learns about. The three day meetings in the club are covered by a veil of mystery and many conspiracy theories start, which create different hypothesis for the activities in the club. “Times” daily newspaper writes that “the Bilderberg Club is the camarilla of the richest economically and politically powerful people in the Western world, who meet in secret, in order to plan events, which later on just happen.”

The headquarters of the club is in the Dutch city Leiden, and the first meeting of the club takes place in May of 1954 in Hotel Bilderberg, which name has the club. The main rules are that the meetings continue for three days from 08:00am until 08:00pm with a small lunch break. For each topic, the orators have five minutes to put forward their arguments and after that, the rest have 2 minutes each for a comment.

The key figure in founding this club was Joseph Retinger, who is the supporter of the economical and military unification idea of Europe. By using his strong connections, Retinger realizes his idea for a secret meeting, where all discussions are done behind closed doors. He remains the secretary of the club until his death in 1960.

The world’s financial and political elite are to hold a closed meeting in France on Thursday where delegates are expected to be focusing their attention on post war Iraq.

The Bilderberg meeting will be held in Versailles just before the start of the Group of Seven meeting of finance ministers in nearby Paris.

Bilderberg, which was founded in the 1950s by Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, is said to steer international policy from behind closed doors.

Its critics say that it is a capitalist organisation which operates entirely through self interest.

By anyone’s standards, it is a bit of a mystery.

There are no members as such – instead, an invitation list is comprised each year by an unknown steering committee, but participants are mainly leading and powerful figures in the fields of business and politics.

Political clout

The meetings are cloaked in secrecy and participants rarely reveal their attendance, although this year’s list is rumoured to include the American banker David Rockefeller and Henry Kissinger.

What the group actually does is no clearer either, although it’s known to be an extremely influential lobbying group with a good deal of political clout on both sides of the Atlantic.

Key members of both the British and the US governments are said to have attended gatherings.

But critics accuse Bilderberg of being sinister and conspiratorial – if what the delegates are discussing is really for the good of ordinary people they ask, then why can’t they publicise it?

A shadowy group of world leaders and decision makers are meeting in Ottawa this weekend, cloaked in a blanket of security and secrecy that has conspiracy theorists’ websites working overtime.

Considered one of the world’s most powerful and secret societies, the Bilderberg group’s annual meeting was scheduled to be attended by about 130 people at the Brook Street Resort.

And the Canadian complement includes Indigo books CEO Heather Reisman and former New Brunswick premier Frank McKenna.

British prime ministers Tony Blair has spoken to the group in the past, as have former Canadian prime ministers Pierre Trudeau and Jean Chretien. Stephen Harper attended in 2003, when he was Opposition Leader. The prime minister is not expected, however, to attend this year’s conference.

MONTEBELLO, Que. – Sitting in the boarded-up Bar Central, nursing a quart of Labatt Blue, Gaetan says he’s never seen anything like it.

For years he worked as a waiter at the Chateau Montebello, through meetings of some of the most powerful leaders in the world. But never has he seen the kind of security and disruption to the town’s tranquil existence that he’s seen over the past few days.

“I worked at the Chateau for 33 years,” said Gaetan, who declined to give his family name. “I served at the economic summit in 1981, I served at the Bilderberg meeting in 1983 and I served at NATO in 1983. Up until now there has never been damage but then, (President George W.) Bush wasn’t there at the time.” Today, Montebello’s Bar Central will be closed for the first time in its 50-year history as the picturesque town hugging the shore of the Ottawa River braces for the arrival Monday of Bush, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Mexican President Felipe Calderon to discuss plans for a North American Security and Prosperity Partnership. Thousands of protesters are also expected.

The Bilderberg group of the world’s elite, currently meeting in northern Italy and celebrating its 50th anniversary, casts an extensive shadow on the net.

This year, apparently, BP boss John Browne, US senator John Edwards and Mrs Bill Gates are among the invitees. People who have been in the past include the likes of Henry Kissinger (a regular), Prince Charles, Bill Clinton, Donald Rumsfeld, Peter Mandelson, Kenneth Clarke, King Juan Carlos and Lord Black (although reportedly he’s now off the guest list after his Telegraph travails).

Bilderberg’s only activity is its annual Conference. At the meetings, no resolutions are proposed, no votes taken, and no policy statements issued. Since 1954, fifty-five conferences have been held. The names of the participants are made available to the press. Participants are chosen for their experience, their knowledge, and their standing; all participants attend Bilderberg in a private and not an official capacity.

For four days some of the West’s chief political movers, business leaders, bankers, industrialists and strategic thinkers will hunker down in a five-star hotel in northern Italy to talk about global issues.

What sets Bilderberg apart from other high-powered get-togethers, such as the annual World Economic Forum (WEF), is its mystique.

Not a word of what is said at Bilderberg meetings can be breathed outside. No reporters are invited in and while confidential minutes of meetings are taken, names are not noted.

The shadowy aura extends further – the anonymous answerphone message, for example; the fact that conference venues are kept secret. The group, which includes luminaries such as Henry Kissinger and former UK chancellor Kenneth Clarke, does not even have a website.

In the BBC article, they try to pass off the Bilderberg Group as a conspiracy theory. World Leaders meeting in secret for over 50 years and mainstream media covering up for them is never ok.
