56,000 anti-fraud police officers on alert at ATMs
To stem the increase in bank-transfer scams, about 56,000 police officers were dispatched to 81,000 ATM locations Wednesday when 40 million seniors received 6.5 trillion yen ($64 billion) in pension benefits.
Police monitored ATM usage and warned people about the danger of the scams. The patrols, covering about 80 percent of ATM locations in Japan, were part of the National Police Agency’s October campaign month against fraud.
