Oil Spill In Southern Brazil Kills 2,000 Penguins

NASDAQ

(RTTNews) - Some 2,000 dead penguins and many other oil-drenched animals have been found by the authorities and people in a southern Brazilian island resort since Sunday, media reports said.

Hundreds of other animals survived the catastrophe, and were being taken care of by experts in Santa Catarina state capital Florianopolis. Most of the surviving animals are in a terrible condition, and biologists and veterinarians from other Brazilian states have been called to assist in cleaning the animals.

Environmental police in the southern Brazilian states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul suspect an unidentified ship behind the cause of the oil spill that killed the penguins and contaminated other animals in the area. Brazilian navy boats and planes are now searching for the oil spill in the high seas.
